The Maestro's Pick:  I am A Cheetah by Tristeza
Why:  When I picked up Dream Signals in Full Circles in the late 90s I was in a crossover between britpop and indie rock.  I heard this record and it was this beautiful, lush, sensitive instrumental ROCK music (bass, drums, keys guitar by a band) and I couldn't stop listening to it.  From there my desire to find more instrumental rock bands kept growing, and my need somewhat satisfied by bands like Pelican, Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Ros and the like.

Honorable Mention:  Just About Glad by Elvis Costello
Why:  I thank my friend from college Jay for giving me a cassette with Brutal Youth (this track is off this album by Elvis and The Attractions) by Elvis Costello on one side and Adventure by Television on the other in 2000.  When listening to cassettes, I would refrain from rewinding or fast forwarding to get to tracks I enjoyed.  I often found with the songs or albums I didn't like, that with repeated listens I would "get it".  Well, I loved Brutal Youth, with it's lyrical density, assertive performances and Costello's trademark swagger.  But, that cassette made me love Television even more, as I was a fan of Marquee Moon.  But I still give the nod to Brutal Youth.
