Maestro's Pick: Rebellion (Lies) by Arcade Fire.
Why: Perhaps the last of it's kind. A truly inspired long-player, short on musical cliches, long on ambition. And their debut, too? That's just freaking ridiculous. Seeing these guys at Cornell in 2004 put on a show that nearly collapsed the building was one of the best shows I have ever seen.
Honorable Mentions:
Head Down by Soundgarden: Thank god these guys had some hits. It would have been a tragedy to see them go unnoticed with the most interesting catalog of mind-bending heavy rock put out in the last twenty years.
Helpless by Sugar: Post-Husker Du Bob Mould kills it. On bass, Dave Barbe, one of Athens, GA's finest record producers.
