The Maestro's Pick: Zodiac by The Melvins
Why: Bullhead by the Melvins is my favorite of theirs. It is where they went from a blasty-punk heavy band to a sludge-hammer and showed the Seattle scene (and beyond) how heavy and dramatic guitar music can be. It is completely psychotic, demented and brutal and paved the way (along with Neurosis and Earth) for post-metal, sludge, doom and drone metal bands like Isis, Pelican, Cult of Luna and Torche.
Honorable Mention: Where the Streets Have No Name by U2
Why: That's right. I said it. It's easy to call 'em out, but when I was in 10th grade, I walked to school everyday listening to my Walkman (the real deal cassette kind) and this album was a staple for a very long time. I had just gotten out of a Van Hagar kick and The Joshua Tree introduced me to alternative rock and ultimately my music tastes from indiepop to metalcore.
