Volume 10: Rock and Roll Trivia 10

Kicks & Chicks - The Zipps
Koei - Boris
I'm Not Down - The Clash
A-Punk - Vampire Weekend
When You Were Young - The Killers
The Official Ironmen Rally Song - Guided By Voices
I Sweat - The Causey Way
Lust For Life - Girls
Way Out - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Acetone - Mudhoney
Do I do - Stevie Wonder
Speak Now Or Forever Hold Your Peace - Cheap Trick
The Rat - Dead Confederate
Mr. Woman - Electric Six
You Can Hide Your Lover Forever - Comet Gain

The Maestro's Pick:  Acetone by Mudhoney
Why:  Mudhoney was one of those bands in the late 80s and early 90s that rolled with the Seattle scene, and rightly so.  Although they never peaked as high as the PJs or SG or Nirvana, they kicked WAY more ass and WERE the band in Seattle.  Listen to Super Fuzz Big Muff and you'll see them as the new version of MC5, hyped up on crank, ready to party, writing music that was as blistering as it was smart.  Mudhoney, along with The Melvins, were the tent poles that bands like PJ and SG and Nirvana were trying to impress.

Untitled - Japanther

Bag It Up - Oasis

The Maestro's Pick:  Fake Empire by The National
Why:  I love this album.  It took several listens to get it, but this band is phenomenal, and the deep vocals and sometimes shitty, sometimes brilliant lyrics keep plenty to keep listening to.

Lunar sea - Camera Obscura
Three Seed - Silversun Pickups
For We Are The King Of The Boudoir - The Magnetic Fields

Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands - Elliott Smith
Out On The Floor - Dobie Gray
Father To A Sister Of Thought - Pavement
I'm Bound To Pack It Up - The White Stripes

Rock Maestro's Pick:  SABBATH!!
Why:  Definitely my favorite Sabbath album, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.  These guys defined nearly every metal genre decades before the next generation could think it.  Truly a pioneering band, and in my opinion, the most influential band in music history.

Honorable Mention:  I do want to point out that iTunes RANDOMLY selected Broken Social Scene, Jack White (via Raconteurs and White Stripes) and Magnetic Fields on both volumes 7 and 8.  Weird.  Classic pre-celebrity status WS, and MF's best work, this song off 69 Love Songs.

Volume 7: Rock and Roll Trivia 10

Planet Queen - T. Rex
Jesus Saves, I Spend - St. Vincent
Return To Me - Sparklehorse
Crystal Gypsy - Sebadoh
You Don't Understand Me - The Raconteurs
Mr. Pharmacist - The Other Half
Girl Lawyer - Mitch Fatel

Man Ray - The Futureheads
The Wanderer - Del Shannon
The Hazards Of Love 4 (The Drowned) - The Decemberists
Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield
Biff! Bang! Pow! - The Creation
Almost Crimes (Radio Kills Remix) - Broken Social Scene

Rock Maestro's Pick:  This is a toughy.  Represented here are some of my favorites.  So let's do this one differently.

1.  Sparklehorse.  Goodmorningspider is one of my top 5 albums of all time.  Can not recommend this slab o wax enough.  This track is off his fourth album.
2.  Broken Social Scene.  You Forgot it in People is one of my top 5s of all time as well.  I'll never forget  the image of moving into my first purchased house while I was captivated by this one.
3. St. Vincent.  What indie rocker doesn't have a crush on Annie Clark?  C'mon.  I'm human.
4.  The Futureheads.  Best The Jam-influenced band to come around in a while.  They came outta nowhere and their debut album is crazy good top to bottom.

Honorable Mentions:  T Rex and Iggy Pop, Curtis Mayfield in this category?  This is how good this comp is.

Volume 6: Rock and Roll Trivia 10

If Not For You George Harrison
Blue and Gold Print  Mates Of State
Three Easy Payments Mitch Hedberg
Cable Babies Japanther
There's Always Room On The Broom Liars
Blunt Tapes 'N Tapes
Ekstrak - Mass Dampers DJ Rupture
Wherein Lies Continue Slipknot
Where The Pigs Don't Fly Suede
Bubble of Sanity Patton Oswalt
13 - Just About Glad Elvis Costello
Listen (Bonus Track) Al Green
You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb Spoon
I Am A Cheetah Tristeza
Prefix Free Parts & Labor

The Maestro's Pick:  I am A Cheetah by Tristeza
Why:  When I picked up Dream Signals in Full Circles in the late 90s I was in a crossover between britpop and indie rock.  I heard this record and it was this beautiful, lush, sensitive instrumental ROCK music (bass, drums, keys guitar by a band) and I couldn't stop listening to it.  From there my desire to find more instrumental rock bands kept growing, and my need somewhat satisfied by bands like Pelican, Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Ros and the like.

Honorable Mention:  Just About Glad by Elvis Costello
Why:  I thank my friend from college Jay for giving me a cassette with Brutal Youth (this track is off this album by Elvis and The Attractions) by Elvis Costello on one side and Adventure by Television on the other in 2000.  When listening to cassettes, I would refrain from rewinding or fast forwarding to get to tracks I enjoyed.  I often found with the songs or albums I didn't like, that with repeated listens I would "get it".  Well, I loved Brutal Youth, with it's lyrical density, assertive performances and Costello's trademark swagger.  But, that cassette made me love Television even more, as I was a fan of Marquee Moon.  But I still give the nod to Brutal Youth.

Volume 5: Rock and Roll Trivia 10

Down In A Hole Alice in Chains
This Lullaby Queens Of The Stone Age
Zodiac Melvins
09 Track 9 Kylesa
High Head Blues The Black Crowes
The Singer Not the Song The Rolling Stones
How's My Drinking? Guided By Voices
where the streets have no name U2
72 (This Highway's Mean) Drive By Truckers
Found Out About You Gin Blossoms
Track 04 Soul Music Compilation
Mercy, Mercy Don Covay
Truest Love Superdrag
Obvious Janes Addiction
Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands Elliott Smith

The Maestro's Pick:  Zodiac by The Melvins
Why:  Bullhead by the Melvins is my favorite of theirs.  It is where they went from a blasty-punk heavy band to a sludge-hammer and showed the Seattle scene (and beyond) how heavy and dramatic guitar music can be.  It is completely psychotic, demented and brutal and paved the way (along with Neurosis and Earth) for post-metal, sludge, doom and drone metal bands like Isis, Pelican, Cult of Luna and Torche.

Honorable Mention:  Where the Streets Have No Name by U2
Why:  That's right.  I said it.  It's easy to call 'em out, but when I was in 10th grade, I walked to school everyday listening to my Walkman (the real deal cassette kind) and this album was a staple for a very long time.  I had just gotten out of a Van Hagar kick and The Joshua Tree introduced me to alternative rock and ultimately my music tastes from indiepop to metalcore.

Everything Beautiful Is Far Aw Grandaddy
smooth criminal Michael Jackson
Strange Love (Single Version) Slim Harpo

section 13 (diamonds_mild devotion to majesty) the polyphonic spree
Blackbird / Yesterday The Beatles
The Jessica Numbers The New Pornographers
Come Together Times New Viking
Time To Pretend MGMT
My Apocalypse Metallica
Lightning song Blood on the Wall

Maestro's Pick: Hardcore UFOs by GbV
Why: Robert Pollard is a genius.  Prolific beyond comprehension.  His lo-fi production, replete with fuck-ups and all,  is unsettling during initial listens, but his world-class rock vocals, literary master lyrics and deceptively complex songwriting is classic GbV.  A true broke-the-mold rock act.

Honorable Mentions:
Time to Pretend by MGMT: fantastic album, produced by Dave Fridmann of Flaming Lips fame, gets this band's ideals right.
The Jessica Numbers by New Pornographers:  West coast Canadians with impeccable songcraft and orchestration.  Every album a fun listen.  Made Neko Case who she is.

Zürich Is Stained Pavement

Maestro's Pick: Picnic By The Motorway by Suede
Why:  Swaggery, full of confidence, virtuoso guitar playing, a femme quality, practically unknown in the States and soaring epic soundscapes and lyrics made this one of my favo(u)rite brit bands of the 90s.

Honorable Mention:
Jump in the Fire: Old school Metallica from their adrenaline soaked debut
Song for Bob Dylan: My favorite Bowie album, Hunky Dory

Fishing The Sky The Appleseed Cast
Take A Letter, Maria R. B. Greaves
Two States Pavement
Stepping Off Jason Forrest
Jigsaw Mates Of State
Walking By Myself    Johnny Winter

Maestro's Pick: Jigsaw by Mates of State
Why: Although this married couple upset long-time listeners with their latest album, I think it has a fantastic vibe that is well-suited in their catalog, upping the ante for a more thoughtful and emotional Mates of State.  I couldn't stop listening to the album in my head for three months when I first heard it.

Honorable Mention:
Two States by Pavement: Not my favorite Pavement record, but this was the door opener for what would become a truly great band.  Slanted and Enchanted: a classic indie must-listen.

Volume 1: Rock and Roll Trivia 10

Track Listing on Volume 1 of Rock and Roll Trivia 10 CD

Out of Time        The Rolling Stones
Helpless                 Sugar
Racing Like a Pro The National
Masturbation          Dave Attell
Iron Tusk                  Mastodon
Rebellion (Lies)  The Arcade Fire
Dearly Beloved  Jack Montgomery
Run's House 2         Run-D.M.C.
Dancing Days         Led Zeppelin
Head Down         Soundgarden

Maestro's Pick: Rebellion (Lies) by Arcade Fire.
Why:  Perhaps the last of it's kind.  A truly inspired long-player, short on musical cliches, long on ambition.  And their debut, too?  That's just freaking ridiculous.  Seeing these guys at Cornell in 2004 put on a show that nearly collapsed the building was one of the best shows I have ever seen.

Honorable Mentions:
Head Down by Soundgarden:  Thank god these guys had some hits.  It would have been a tragedy to see them go unnoticed with the most interesting catalog of mind-bending heavy rock put out in the last twenty years.
Helpless by Sugar: Post-Husker Du Bob Mould kills it.  On bass, Dave Barbe, one of Athens, GA's finest record producers.
